Our Story
Welcome to ProjectX
We are Jaqui and Tony, passionate sailors and adventurers who embarked on Viki Moore’s Island Cruising (www.islandcruising.nz) Pacific Rally in 2024. Our journey was not just about the destination but the amazing tools and technology we discovered to ensure our safety and efficiency on the high seas.
Our Story
Before setting sail from New Zealand, we knew that high-resolution satellite images were crucial for safe navigation. We set up our Apple MacBook with OpenCPN software and Bruce Balan’s wonderful downloads, supported by a backup Windows laptop. This setup became the backbone of our route planning, allowing us to meticulously plan each leg, spot potential hazards, and adjust our routes as needed.
As we navigated the Pacific, we relied heavily on satellite overlays from Google, Bing, Arc, and Navionics. These tools enabled us to chart safe routes, even through uncharted territories. We meticulously planned and saved our routes, which were then exported to our helm-based B&G plotter, autopilot, and Navionics App on our iPads.
Challenges and Innovations
While our initial setup worked brilliantly for pre-determined routes, we faced challenges when anchoring in unfamiliar bays. The removal of the satellite overlay feature by Navionics in September pushed us to innovate further. We found a rugged, waterproof Android tablet capable of running OpenCPN with satellite overlays and an accurate GPS.
This transformation was revolutionary for us:
- OpenCPN at the helm with multiple satellite and chart layers.
- A waterproof setup for all weather conditions, with a 12+ hour battery life.
- Seamless route transfer and modification on the go.
- Integration with PredictWind DataHub for real-time data and AIS targets.
- Comprehensive charts and overlays for the SW Pacific.
- Full internet access at the helm via ship’s Wi-Fi and Starlink, supporting various apps.
- 4G/LTE SIM compatibility for internet access even without Starlink.
- Portability for use ashore with weatherproof functionality.
- Enhanced navigation and safety features for our tender.
- High-quality camera for documenting our journey and staying connected.
Looking Forward
Back in New Zealand, we are constantly seeking to upgrade our gear for the next season. With new, higher-spec tablets in hand, we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in marine navigation.
Inspired by our experiences, we are excited to share these innovative solutions with fellow adventurers. Join us in exploring the world safely and efficiently with cutting-edge technology and a spirit of adventure.
